The Legend of John Henry
John Henry is a beautiful mule
who has proven himself in driving, fox hunting, pleasure, dressage,
and as a pack mule. Read his wonderful story as written by his
owner, Cathleen Conklin
This is John Henry. He is a mule [Percheron mare crossed with
a Mammoth Donkey jack] who is 16-2" tall , weighs 1,400
[on a scale] and is 6-7 years old. I bought him 4 years ago from
an Amish dealer as an unbroke and
untouchable 2 coming 3 year old. We have come a long way since
then......
I have logged over 1,700 hours in the saddle on the trail - we
were the first
in the nation to reach that level in the North American Saddle
Mule
Association Versality Trail Program. Our major maladjustment,
however, is
that we are ardent fox hunters. John Henry and I fox hunt [first
field] with
the Old Chatham Hunt in upstate NY. We gallop and jump with all
t he horses
and he never goes any faster than the horse next to him! He never
pulls an ounce!
My husband bought a full set of
packs and every fall has John Henry carry in all the supplies
needed for deer hunting from a base camp that is back in
the woods 5 miles. The normal load weighs about 200 lbs. My husband
tells everyone who will listen that he carries a hand gun on
those back-in pack
trips because he will have to shoot himself if anything happens
to John Henry or I will do it when he gets back!!
We have competed successfully at
horse shows and pleasure driving shows and just recently I have
started competing in nationally rated combined driving events.
In our first CDE [7th Annual Garden State Horse and Carriage
Society Combined Driving Event] John Henry won his division [training
level - single horse]. He had the best driven dressage score,
no points off in presentation, was clean and fast in the cones
course and only had 15 time faults [for coming in a little late]
on the marathon. The vets talked about him all day because he
was the best conditioned horse on the grounds and they wanted
to give him the "best conditioned" award - but they
don't give
them in CDE's!
We have also driven friends to weddings
and proms and taken ourselves down
the road just for pleasure....
John Henry is the best equine I
have ever been "owned" by but now I have to
figure out the next thing I want to teach him!

Stolen Horse/Mule
Information nfortunately, the
crime of horse theft still goes on. Many of these stolen animals
end up at slaughter houses. Below is a list of the only four
killer-processors for horse flesh in the United States. If your
horse or mule is stolen, fax a description to each of the following
companies. They are very cooperative, and will be on the lookout
for any animal with distinctive markings.
Please be aware that one the animal is inside the plant, federal
law prohibits its removal, and it must be destroyed. The animal
must be identified in the holding pens before it enters the plant.
Remember: contacting them within the first 24 hours the animal
is missing greatly increases the chance of saving the animal.
